Welcome to Alive Together ("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring you have a positive experience while using our mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our App.
By using Alive Together, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide Directly
- Account Information: When you create an account, we collect:
- Email address
- Username
- Password (stored securely using encryption)
- Profile photo (avatar)
- Bio/description
- Date of birth (used to verify age eligibility and for birthday celebrations within the App)
- Authentication: We support multiple sign-in methods:
- Email and password
- Google Sign-In
- Apple Sign-In
When you use social sign-in, we may receive your name, email address, and profile picture from the authentication provider.
- Content You Create:
- Daily moment submissions (photos and videos)
- Chat messages (text, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, GIFs, stickers, and polls)
- Group content (group submissions, group chat messages)
- LiveSnaps (ephemeral photos and videos shared with friends)
- Whiteboard drawings
- Friend requests you send
- Likes, reactions, and other interactions on submissions
- Feedback posts and comments
- Contacts: With your explicit permission, we access your device contacts to help you find friends on the platform. Phone numbers are cryptographically hashed (SHA-256) before being transmitted to our servers — we never store or see your contacts' actual phone numbers.
- Location Data You Share: You may optionally attach a location to chat messages. When you do, we collect the latitude, longitude, and location name you choose to share. This is always opt-in per message.
Information Collected Automatically
- Usage Data: We collect information about how you use the App, including:
- Moments you view
- Submissions you create
- Friends you connect with
- Features you interact with
- Device Information: We may collect:
- Device type and operating system
- App version
- Unique device identifiers
- Location Data: We collect timezone information to determine daily moment availability. We do not track your location in the background. If you choose to share a location in a chat message, that location data is stored with the message (see "Content You Create" above).
- Push Notification Tokens: We collect your device's push notification token to deliver notifications such as new mission alerts, friend requests, chat messages, and streak reminders. You can control notification categories in the App settings.
- Phone Number (optional): If you add your phone number for contact-based friend discovery, it is stored in a private subcollection accessible only to you. Your phone number is also hashed for matching purposes.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and Maintain the Service:
- Create and manage your account
- Display daily moments and group missions
- Process and store your submissions (photos, videos)
- Enable friend connections, groups, and social features
- Deliver chat messages, voice messages, and shared media
- Facilitate contact-based friend discovery (using hashed phone numbers)
- Send push notifications you have opted into

How We Share Your Information
Public Information
The following information is visible to other users:
- Your username
- Your profile photo
- Your bio
- Your moment submissions (photos, videos, and associated data)
- Your moment completion statistics (moments captured, current streak, etc.)
Limited Sharing
We may share your information in the following circumstances:
- With Friends: If you accept a friend request, that friend can see your submissions in the "Friends" feed and your LiveSnaps
- With Chat Participants: Messages, media, voice messages, documents, and locations you share in conversations or group chats are visible to the other participants
- With Group Members: Content you share in groups (submissions, chat messages) is visible to group members
- With All Users: Your submissions may appear in the "Global" feed, visible to all authenticated users (unless your profile is set to private)
- Service Providers: We use the following third-party services:
- Firebase (Google): Backend services including authentication, data storage, file storage, push notifications, crash reporting, and analytics
- DeepL: For translating chat messages (message text is sent to DeepL's API when you request a translation)
- GIPHY: For searching and sharing GIFs (your search queries are sent to GIPHY's API)
- Agora: For voice and video calls (call audio/video is routed through Agora's servers)
- Carto: For rendering map tile previews when locations are shared in chat
- Google Fonts: For loading typefaces used in the App's interface
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights
We Do NOT Sell Your Data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.
Data Storage and Security
Where Your Data is Stored
- Firebase Services: Your data is stored on Google Firebase servers
- Location: Data may be stored in various geographic locations as determined by Firebase
- Retention: We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services
Security Measures
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data:
- Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS)
- Secure authentication
- Access controls
- Regular security assessments
However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:
Access and Portability
- Request a copy of your personal data
- Export your data in a machine-readable format
Correction
- Update or correct your personal information through the App settings
- Edit your profile information at any time
Deletion
- Delete your account and all associated data directly from the App settings (Settings → Delete Account)
- Account deletion removes your profile, submissions, chat messages, friend connections, group memberships, uploaded media, authentication credentials, and date of birth
- Note: Some information may be retained for legal or legitimate business purposes
Opt-Out
- Adjust privacy settings in the App (e.g., make profile private)
- Control notification preferences per category (missions, streaks, friends, chat)
- Unfriend, block, or mute users at any time
- Revoke contact access through your device settings at any time
California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights:
- Right to know what personal information is collected
- Right to delete personal information
- Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell your data)
- Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights
European Privacy Rights (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have additional rights:
- Right to access your personal data
- Right to rectification
- Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten")
- Right to restrict processing
- Right to data portability
- Right to object to processing
- Right to withdraw consent
Swiss Data Protection (FADP/DSG)
As a Swiss company, we comply with the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP/DSG). If you are located in Switzerland, you have rights similar to those under the GDPR, including:
- Right to access your personal data

- Right to deletion of your data

Children's Privacy
Alive Together is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately, and we will delete that information.
Third-Party Services
Firebase (Google)
We use Google Firebase for:
- User authentication
- Data storage (Firestore)
- File storage (Firebase Storage) for photos, videos, audio, and documents
- Push notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)
- Crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics)
- Remote configuration (Firebase Remote Config)
- App integrity verification (Firebase App Check)
- Analytics
Your use of Firebase services is subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
DeepL
When you use the message translation feature, the text of the message is sent to DeepL's API for translation. DeepL's privacy policy applies.
GIPHY
When you search for GIFs in chat, your search query is sent to GIPHY's API. GIPHY's privacy policy applies.
Agora
Voice and video calls use Agora's real-time communication infrastructure. Call audio and video streams are routed through Agora's servers but are not stored by them. Agora's privacy policy applies.
Carto
When you share or view a location in chat, map tiles are loaded from Carto's content delivery network to render the map preview. Carto's privacy policy applies.
Google Fonts
The App loads certain typefaces from Google's font delivery service at runtime. Google's Privacy Policy applies.
Social Sign-In Providers
When you use Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In:
International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that differ from those in your country. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by:
- Posting the new Privacy Policy in the App
- Updating the "Last Updated" date
- Sending you an email notification (for material changes)
Your continued use of the App after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
Offline Functionality
Alive Together includes offline functionality that allows you to:
- View previously loaded content
- Take photos and videos
- Queue submissions and messages for upload when connection is restored
Data stored locally on your device for offline functionality is only accessible by the App.
Data Retention
- Account data: Retained for as long as your account is active. Deleted when you delete your account.
- Chat messages: Retained until deleted by the sender or until account deletion. Disappearing messages are automatically deleted after the configured duration.
- LiveSnaps: Automatically expire and are deleted after 24 hours.
- Uploaded media: Retained until the associated content is deleted or account is deleted.
- Date of birth: Retained for as long as your account is active. Deleted when you delete your account.
- Hashed phone numbers: Retained until you remove your phone number or delete your account.
- Device identifiers: Used for abuse prevention and retained for the lifetime of the account.
- Analytics and crash data: Retained according to Firebase's standard retention policies.
